The next designer to be featured in Creative Quarters is Jodie Smith...
Jodie Smith is a Printed Textiles and Surface Pattern student at Leeds College of Art, due to graduate Summer 2017.
She has developed an illustrative, playful style with a love of
colour and characters and feels this lends itself well to designing for children.
Jodie would like to design children’s clothing, books,
stationery and greetings in the future and is seeking either freelance
or in house work but is also considering looking to be represented by an agent.
She is also thinking about developing her storytelling skills through an
MA in children’s book illustration in a few years time.
Jodie enjoys traditional drawing processes such as collage and lino printing but also likes using illustrator for its graphic quality.
She is constantly inspired by children’s book illustrators but her all time favourites are Eric Carle and Christian Robinson, two fellow collagers.
2016 was a busy year for her.
In February she exhibited at Premiere Vision in Paris in February
where she met Lemon Ribbon who she later completed a placement with.
She was shortlisted in a live brief with Tigerprint and also came second in a live brief with Hallmark where she won a cash prize and another placement.
Jodie also exhibited at Surtex NY as well as MoOd in Brussels, all with Leeds College of Art.
She was shortlisted for the Mollie Makes magazine handmade awards
under the ‘Youth’ category and got to present her future business ideas to the panel of Pinterest and Etsy, which was very exciting.
It made her more determined to have her own business in the future.
In her spare time she enjoys visiting new places, going to cafes for tea and cake and cuddling cats, as well as blogging at Pattern Perspective where she celebrates all things pattern and places/things she finds inspiring.
She finds inspiration everywhere but especially when visiting exhibitions, galleries, museums, antique markets and vintage shops.
Jodie can’t wait to see where 2017 takes her, especially life after university, but first she has got a degree show to design and hopes that she will be exhibiting at New Designers in Summer (exciting!)
